The Heart of the Matter

I finish up my series about having a quiet time with God today over at Spiriutally Unequal Marriage. Stop by and read it if you can. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

933344_i_love_you Over the last two weeks I’ve shared the importance of having a quiet time. My fear is that we haven’t covered the heart of this discipline and see it more as a duty, so I want to make that clear today.
Not having a quiet time each day isn’t a sin. You haven’t broken a law or anything like that. Above all else, do not let this become something legalistic in your life. And I say that as someone who could fall into legalism and must guard against it.
At the very least, see having a quiet time with God as an opportunity to grow closer to Him and understand His love for you. And to the extreme, see it as a life preserver to your spirit in a drowning world ruled by an enemy who loves nothing more than to keep us from experiencing an effective life in Christ. Our time with God and reading His Word every day is the only way to arm ourselves against our common enemy.

Let's Not Fool Ourselves

This post was a tough one to write but it was time. I hope you'll take a moment and hop over to our Spiritually Unequal Marriage page and read the rest. The conversation continues on our Facebook page as well. Thanks!

Yesterday, Lynn wrote a great post about Missionary Dating at the Internet Cafe. She and I have talked about this frequently because we want to be clear that walking willingly into a mismatched marriage is not God's will for our lives.
So I'd like to add to this topic from the sense of the heart and spirit. Here at S.U.M. we talk about our struggles in our mismatched marriages and how to trust God to help us thrive in them. But today I want to talk to those who are knowingly dating or considering dating and unbeliever. Here are some things I truly want you to think about.

Our Greatest Weapon—Prayer

The post I did this week over at Spiritually Unequal Marriage has brought some interesting discussions about praying for our marriages. I hope you'll take a moment and check it out. Would love to hear your thoughts!

Our Greatest Weapon—Prayer

At church Sunday, a friend of mine stood up with her husband and shared their testimony of how God saved their marriage ten years ago. I’ve only been at this church for about nine years so I had no idea this was the case. This couple has been an inspiration to me, especially my friend. She is an amazing woman of God and a true prayer warrior.

To hear them share spoke such joy to my heart. They shared how they were at the point of filing divorce papers. He wanted out, she didn’t. What did my friend do? She fell to her knees in prayer, prayed constantly. What struck me most though was WHAT she prayed.

Marriage for Training

I'm blogging over at Spiritually Unequal Marriage today about what would happen if we shifted our view of how God uses marriage to prep us for deeper intimacy with Him. I read an interesting post by Kevin Adams that really made me think about this. I hope you'll go check out my post and Kevin's article over at S.U.M.

They are the best! Their team came up with THE perfect title and a gorgeous cover.

God is doing amazing things with this book—His book. You can read our post over at S.U.M. to read our official announcement. Praise God and blessings to you!

Thankful Thursday!

This month S.U.M. is hosting Thankful Thursday. As today is the one year anniversary of my daughter's diagnoses of a brain tumor, what better time to be thankful! Though at the moment we're not sure what's causing the return of her headaches, I am thankful she's persevered through this last year and cancer free! God is good! So here's my list.

I am thankful for:
  • My daughter's recovery.
  • My wonderful hubby who's always so positive.
  • Two beautiful daughters who make this mama so proud.
  • My best friends who are always there to rally around me, even when I overreact. :-)
  • God bringing me into the S.U.M. ministry to share that journey with Lynn (love you, girl!)
  • And finally, I'm thankful for God in my life. I can't imagine going through life without his constant presence. Lord, I adore you! You are my life!
What are you thankful for?

What's Your Story?

859675_book___For the last two days I've read the story of Zechariah and his prophecy at the end of Luke 1. As a writer of fiction too, I tend to put myself in these stories and imagine the scene, the character motivations, and what those around them must have thought. Well, my writer brain wound up stuck in this story for two days!

First of all, I got a chuckle out of the people signing at Zechariah to ask what he wanted his son named. The man was mute, not deaf. (Hee hee...) But how real to life is that? It's like someone speaking really loud to a person who doesn't understand English. Like the higher volume will help them suddenly understand the language.

But what really ran deep with me in this story was the time line. For thousands of years, the Jews lived with the Messianic prophecies as something that would happen in the future. They didn't know when. Then Zechariah comes along and puts a definite time frame on something so profound as the Messiah's coming.

I thought of those there for John's circumcision, listening to this priest speak of his son going before the Messiah to prepare the way. Not only did he speak great things about John, but he put a very real and tangible time to when their long awaited "horn of salvation" was coming.

Yet thirty years would pass before Jesus entered his ministry. Did those who witnessed the loosening of Zechariah's tongue and prophecy begin to doubt and wonder as the years passed? As John grew up, did his father's words fall to the wayside for some? Or were they confirmed with each passing day? (And if Elizabeth and Mary were cousins, why didn't Jesus and John meet sooner? The questions are unending!)

My point is, these people had to wait a long time to see if what Zechariah said would really come true. Did they wait expectantly? Or did they begin to doubt?

As I've said before, waiting is a big part of the unequally yoked marriage. As the years pass, it's easy to doubt, to let our prayers lag, and to lose hope. Yet even in this, God gives us examples of people waiting like in Zechariah's story and so many more. These are stories rich in faith and perseverance. Stories of people who didn't give up, even against insurmountable odds.

They are our predecessors and examples of some of the greatest callings recorded. And I can't think of a greater calling than praying without ceasing for the salvation of a loved one.

Even when the odds seem stacked against us, we know our God is a God of Hope and a Keeper of Promises. And with that we can make our own stories of perseverance and faith.

Praying and believing,
Dineen

S.U.M. Blog in Top 100!

Just found out today that our blog Spiritually Unequal Marriage is one of a hundred blogs voted as most encouraging and inspiring over at Internet Cafe Devotions. We fell under the "My Cup of Tea" category. What's so special about this is that our readers took the time to nominate the blog. And to be among so many wonderful blogs and bloggers!

I give all that credit and glory right back to God. He's the one who's made the ministry grow and reach those who need it. I'm simply grateful to be a part of it.
