Fat Factor

Can a viral infection or gut microflora cause you to gain weight or keep you obese even if you don't eat a lot? Here's a link to a NYTimes article entitled Fat Factor by Robin Marantz Henig that shares some startling results.

WARNING: Article is long but definitely worth skimming.

You know I was a stick until I got pregnant with my first child and gained a tremendous amount of weight. For the first time, I realized what it was like to be overweight and how helpless I felt. It seemed no matter what I did the pounds just poured on. I've since gotten back to being thin but I think that lesson was a good one for me and I feel so thankful I have genes that allow me to eat normally without gaining tons of weight. We really aren't all delt the same deck of cards in this life.

Skimmed the first page of the article, then saw that there were 3,635 more pages. I pewtered out.
I've also heard something to the effect of some bacteria that thin people have that obese people don't. I think they were looking at giving this bacteria to obese people. I don't know.

A fat eating bacteria? I like it. You just sprinkle it on your hot fudge sundae and your problems are solved!
